Came across this great blog post by Luke Winn at Sports Illustrated. (Sorry, there’s no permalink, so you’ll have to scroll town to the 11/15/06 entry entitled Architectural Digest, Basketball Edition.)
Rather than just providing more educated guesswork and lame sports punditry concerning teams’ prospects for the upcoming season, Mr. Winn decided to try something different. After writing an article for SI in which he uses a vague architectural analogy to describe five different teams, he decided to go a step further on his blog. He contacted architect Scott Schiamberg from HOK, the leading country’s leading designer of stadiums and arenas, and asked him to match each team’s description to a real-world piece of architecture.
While this may be lost on most of the hardcore college hoops fans, I think it’s commendable that Winn decided to take a leap and actually say something interesting about the sport. For this of us in advertising, this is really just a brand personality exercise, and a really insightful one at that. The analogies seem somewhat valid and the examples are well-chosen.
Extra credit for calling HOK the “UNC of sports architecture firms.” Go Heels.
PS – If Duke were a building, it might look something like this.
